New Website Layout
I’ve wanted to make an artistic website for myself for quite some time and I finally made the time to do it.
Since this is my website, I made some design decisions that I would probably wouldn’t have made if this wasn’t my personal site.
- Big, easy to read font. That’s right, 16px Georgia —none of this grey 10px Verdana crap. My eyes at the end of the day are tired and I want to read my own website without squinting.
- Big layout. I have 2 large flat panel monitors both at 1280 x 1024. I’m tired of designing websites for people with < 800px windows. If you have to scroll horizontally on my website... tough. Buy a better monitor or crank up the resolution.
- No gradients. No two-color web 2.0 logos. No meaningless stock photography. No elaborate tab / button toolbar. No Verdana. I’ve seen all this stuff a million times. I want original.
- My own artwork. I drew the pen drawing on the left so that my site design would be interesting and unique. I didn’t just steal somebody else’s artwork to make my website look nice or slap down some lame collage or fractal.
- Lots of whitespace. I like whitespace, it’s soothing.
- Little color. I like black and white. And when I use color, it’s tastefully emphasized. For instance, the little red “Fizbang flame” really pops out without being obnoxious.
